Service Opportunities with Geneva Heroes

Geneva Heroes, the mentorship program that pairs HWS students with students from the Geneva City School District (GCSD), is actively recruiting more volunteers as the group finalizes its service and community engagement projects for the spring semester.

From volunteering with local organizations and businesses, to engaging in on-campus activities with the larger HWS community, Geneva Heroes melds community service and leadership while offering local students the chance to see what college life is like. Created, staffed, and run by HWS students, the eight-week service and leadership program has grown quickly, with 12 HWS leaders and more than 30 GCSD seventh through 12th graders.

“Through each community service project the students learn what it means to help one another and what being a leader entails,” says Teaganne Finn ’16, who is co-coordinator of Geneva Heroes, leading the mentorship program with Danny Hastings ’16. “It’s not easy for HWS students wake up early on a Saturday morning  but they do it because they know how enjoyable and important it is to the community.”

Hastings and Finn, both Geneva natives, participated in the program as students in Geneva schools.

“It’s been a part of my life for so long, and I really love working with all the students,” says Hastings. “To see them volunteering, having fun, and getting to know each other reminds me why I continue to be involved with Geneva Heroes.”

Project sites set for this year include OM Yoga studio, the Geneva Public Library, St. Peter’s Church and Geneva General Hospital. On campus, the participants will be involved in the Days of Service and have a team building kick off event in the Vandervort Room in Scandling Campus Center.

“The Colleges and the City of Geneva thrive off of each other, and the more interconnected we are the better off we are,” says Hastings. “Just a couple hours working with local businesses, agencies, and community members can change your perspective and really make a difference.”

Applications for interested HWS volunteers are available on HWS Collegiate Link. The application deadline is Friday, Jan. 22.
