This Tuesday marked the graduations for the Jumpstart Geneva programs at Geneva ABCD and at Geneva Head Start. Jumpstart is a literacy initiative that pairs college student AmeriCorps members with pre-school children in early-learning programs.
At the first event, the student volunteers secured funding from the Colleges’ dining services so that the children and their families could enjoy a taste of HWS. The participants received diplomas and special gifts while Corps members shared their favorite anecdotes.
At the second event, AmeriCorps members organized a pizza party at the Geneva Fire Department. Participating children received diplomas, a new book and a star balloon.
The Office of Public Service wishes to offer congratulations to Lisa Taylor ’08, Jillian Petrella ’09 and Katie Smith ’07, who helped lead and organize the program this year. Corps members who finish a 300-hour requirement receive a $1,000 AmeriCorps voucher and a matching donation from the Colleges if used for tuition expenses.
