In the spirit of honoring Hispanic and Latin American culture, the Latin American Organization (LAO) invites members of the HWS and Geneva communities to its annual Extravaganza event to indulge in cuisine, music and performances at the Geneva Events Center on Saturday, April 8, from 5 – 8:30 p.m. Titled “A Night in the Dominican Republic,” the event will include customs from the nation.
“We want to share and celebrate the history and heritage of Latin American and Hispanic cultures with our fellow Hispanics and non-Hispanics so that we can develop a sense of community and empowerment,” says Yesica Bello ’18, LAO Media Coordinator and Elected President.
Live performances will include the Latin music group Grupo Calle Uno from Rochester, N.Y., local singer Chantel Whitley, and student performances from German Veras ’17 and Kevin Collado ’18.
“The Extravaganza is a way for students who are not Hispanic and Latino to learn about a rich culture, and this is the reason that every year we have different themes in the hopes that each year students learn something new,” says Carolin Martinez Diaz ’19, LAO board member and secretary. “It is important that we build community to demonstrate the impact we can have on the HWS and the Geneva community.”
All proceeds from the event will benefit a scholarship fund at the Geneva Boys & Girls Club for summer programs.
Available for purchase in the Scandling Campus Center, tickets are $10 for students and $15 for faculty, staff and community members. Transportation for HWS students will be offered from the Medbery parking lot.
The LAO hosts meetings on Wednesdays from 7-8 p.m. at the Office of Intercultural Affairs; open board meetings are held on Sunday in the Creedon Room at 2 p.m.
