Aiding Education in Guatemala

As an intern for Education for the Children (EFTC), Carling Landeche ’21 wrote grants and fundraised for the School of Hope initiative in Jocotenango, Guatemala this summer. Landeche also helped coordinate a fundraiser set to take place on Friday, Sept. 20 at The Cracker Factory in Geneva, N.Y.

Established by the EFTC, the School of Hope works to break the cycle of poverty in Jocotenango through education and empowerment. Food, healthcare, counselling and career guidance at the school help to remove obstacles hindering children from receiving their education. From Geneva, Landeche worked with Associate Professor of Psychology Brien Ashdown, the executive director of EFTC.

Landeche selected and wrote grants, analyzed the organization’s critical spending needs and wrote letters of inquiry. She also reached out to Finger Lakes businesses and wineries to raise money for a silent auction that will take place at the fundraiser.

“It’s a lot of work, but it is worth it. The nonprofit organizes volunteers, retains qualified teachers, and secures important materials for school work. Even though I’m not there, I’m making a difference.” Landeche says.

As an international relations and economics double major, Landeche says the experience aligned with her career aspirations. “This is exactly what I want to do with my life. I want to work with nonprofits in Latin America focused on youth and education.”

Over the summer, Landeche also worked in the Office of Admissions. Committed to youth education initiatives, Landeche volunteers as a Geneva City Youth Corps leader, where group members participate in community outreach activities through volunteering and learn about civil service careers by meeting with community members. She is a recipient of the Cohen Fellowship through the Centennial Center.

The fundraiser for the School of Hope will include catering by The New Hall Diner, live music by The Swooners, dancing, a silent auction, raffles and merchandise for sale.
