Become a literacy tutor

Literacy Volunteers of Ontario County will host literacy volunteer Tutor Training, starting with an orientation workshop from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 24 at the agency office, 208 S. Main St., Canandaigua.

This is a program that offers volunteers the opportunity to help adults learn to read and write or learn how to speak English.

After the orientation meeting, workshop sessions will be from 6 to 9 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday from April 26 to May 17; attendance at all workshop sessions is required.

To become a tutor, a volunteer must be at least 18 years of age, have an interest in teaching adult learners to read or speak English, be a high school graduate or hold a GED, be able to attend the entire training program and willing to devote at least two hours per week to working with an adult learner. Tutors need not have a teaching background or have knowledge of a foreign language.
