Soldiers’ Angels plan dinner party for deploying troops

A community group called Soldiers' Angels is planning a sendoff dinner for a group of 50 soldiers deploying for Afghanistan, starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16 at the American Legion post on Route 14, south of the city.

Donations and volunteers are now being recruited to help give these soldiers a proper sendoff. Organizers are looking for items for the lunch (or monetary donations), drinks, cake and goodies and paper products.

The Soldiers’ Angels group are also working with the Blue Star Moms to create a going-away backpack for each of the 50 families, with information on Blue Star Moms, Soldiers’ Angels, military resources, community resources, some goodies and toys for the kids from Hershey’s and the Blue Star Moms. Notes of encouragement and support could also be tucked in addressed to the soldier or family member. Donations are needed no later than Friday, Jan. 11.

If you can help out with this event and are able to assist with set up, serving, or clean up please contact Jim Nessler of Winnek Post 396 at or call (315) 789-6068 and leave a message if there's no answer.

The departure will begin about 11 a.m. the next day, Thursday, Jan. 17, when people are being asked to line the streets and wave flags, hold signs of support and cheer.
