For the second consecutive week and fifth time this season, the Hobart College rowing team’s novice eight has been named the Liberty League Boat of the Week. First-years Reynaldo Kelly (Salisbury School/Bronx, N.Y.), Max Swagler (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.), David Roberts (Walt Whitman/Cabin John, Md.), Pierce Hewes (Tower Hill School/Kennett Square, Pa.), Gerry Samson (Concord/Concord, N.H.), Jack Trimble (Westfield/Westfield, N.J.), Evan White (Tabor Academy/Plymouth, Mass.), James Hollyday (Fairfield Prep/Norwalk, Conn.), and Bob Taylor (Bishop Eustace Prep/Merchantville, N.J.) produced the best results of the day in head-to-head racing against Colgate on April 19. After falling to the Raiders’ second varsity eight (6:28.82-6:34.45), the Statesmen took a 15 minute break and then headed back to the starting line for another race. In their second run down the 2,000-meter course, the novice eight defeated Colgate’s novice eight and Hobart’s second novice eight. In the second race, the Statesmen posted a winning time of 6 minutes, 31.67 seconds, more than six seconds ahead of the runner-up. Hobart returns to the water, April 26, when the Statesmen compete in the Liberty League Championship in Saratoga Springs. Hobart is the two-time defending league champion.
