Herons edge Bombers, 5-4

The William Smith College tennis team edged Ithaca College tonight, 5-4. The Herons improved to 10-5 on the season, while the Bombers fell to 13-5 overall. First-year Melissa Slack (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) was the only Heron to record two victories today. She defeated Bomber Sarah Hollis at fourth singles, 7-5, 6-3, and teamed up with sister Amanda Slack (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) for an 8-6 win over Melanie Cohen and Melissa Nunez at No. 2 doubles. Junior Chelsea Rauck (Columbus School for Girls/Bexley, Ohio) took the default win at No. 1 singles, after a hard-fought match at first doubles. Rauck and sophomore Shari Damon (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) fell to Alyssa Jaffe and Agata Kubik 9-8. First-year Gaby Berkman (Champlain Valley Union/Shelburne, Vt.) earned the win at fifth singles, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, over Lindsey Johnston, while senior Erinn Cain (Pal-Mac/Palmyra, N.Y.) and sophomore Meredith Levenson (Andover/Andover, Mass.) recorded the victory at third doubles, 8-5. William Smith will host the Liberty League Championships this weekend, April 26-27. Play on both days will begin at 8 a.m.
