The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team recorded an eighth-place overall finish out of 18 teams in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) National Championship Eastern Semifinal Regatta, which took place on Seneca Lake over the weekend. The team’s finish qualified it for the ISCA Nationals at the end of May, as the top-nine teams advanced. Senior Jay Mills (Hotchkiss School/Greenport, N.Y.) and junior Kaitlyn Van Nostrand (Marine Academy/Allenwood, N.J.) raced in the A division for HWS. They finished in fourth-place with 51 points, after completing five of the eight races in the top-six. They recorded one win. Sailing in the B division was junior Austin Kana (Gunston School/Easton, Md.), along with first-year David Thompson (Mounds View/North Oaks, Minn.), sophomore Meghan Jordan (Clarence Central/East Amherst, N.Y.), and sophomore Maria Trainor (Dover-Sherborn/Sherborn, Mass.). The sailors combined for a 10th-place finish, garnering 75 points. Led by Kana, they came in better than 10th in five of the eight races. The sailing team will be back on the water on May 26, when it competes in the ICSA Women’s National Championships at Brown.
