Kohl, Pietrak honored at Heron Awards Banquet

Two William Smith College cross country runners were honored at the annual Heron Awards Banquet on April 29. Sophomore Katie Pietrak (Nardin Academy/Amherst, N.Y.) was honored with the Sharon Peckham Best ’62 Most Valuable Cross Country Runner Award, while senior Kathleen Kohl (Pembroke/Corfu, N.Y.) was presented with the Cross Country Coach’s Award. Pietrak was the first Heron to cross the finish line in nine of the 10 races she entered last fall, and was the top runner in two meets. She won the 5-kilometer SUNYIT Invitational with a time of 21 minutes, 55 seconds, leading William Smith to a second-place team result along the way. Pietrak also won the 6k Hobart Invitational with a time of 25:51, and registered an impressive 35th-place finish out of 149 runners at the Roberts Wesleyan Invitational. She notched a season-best and team-low 5k time of 20:55 at the Saratoga Invitational. Pietrak was named to the Liberty League’s all-academic team. The lone senior, Kohl brought leadership and experience to the young 2007 squad. She posted a 10th-place finish at the Hobart Invitational, helping the Herons to a first-place team finish. Kohl paced William Smith at the Cross Country Only Championships. She was the first Heron to cross the finish line, recording a season-best 5k time of 21:27. Kohl also earned a spot on the Liberty League All-Academic Team.
