New Tradition Gets Students High

Step right up! Tickets in hand! Tickets! Tuesday evening, tickets in hand, Hobart and William Smith seniors lined up to take the ride of their lives: a hot air balloon high above the Colleges’ campus. Students who won an event during the Battle of the Classes on Tuesday afternoon were offered first dibs at the balloon, flying high in groups of four. “This was an awesome incentive to compete in Battle of the Classes,” says Sequoia Armstrong ’08. “It’s a very unique event, and the fact that it’s happening during senior week makes it that much more special.” Though tethered to the ground at all times, the 8-story-tall rainbow-colored balloon lifted students and staff more than 80 feet above Stiles Practice Fields, offering excellent views of the Village at Odell’s Pond, McCooey Field and the Barn. “This will hopefully become a new tradition for Senior Week,” says Director of Student Activities Robert Pool, who helped organize the event. “We were thinking about a variety of events that would attract students, and hot air balloon rides seemed like a sure bet. The rest is, hopefully, HWS history.”
