Rock n Roll in the Sunken Garden

The toe-tapping classic rock tunes that light up the stage during Senior Week at Hobart and William Smith Colleges aren’t provided by a DJ or a local cover band. When students start singing along to the Beatles, they’re led by an unlikely rock star: their keyboard playing President. After toasting this year’s graduating seniors, Gearan introduced the members of his Garage Band: On Guitar: Director of Opportunity Programs Jim Burruto and Assistant Professor of Theatre Lisa Black On Drums: Director of Student Affairs Robert Pool On Bass: Associate Professor of Political Science Kevin Dunn Vocals: Instructional Technologist Stan Weaver Providing Backing Vocals: Professor of Economics Bill Waller, Professor of Sociology Jim Spates, Professor of Art Elena Ciletti, Assistant Professor of Education Cerri Banks, Interim Dean of Hobart College Eugen Baer and Professor of Media and Society Les Friedman Playing songs from Louie Louie to God Save the Queen, the band gave seniors a rock ‘n roll send-off. But there was one last surprise in store as Gearan welcomed Sodexho Employee Betty Walther to the stage, sending the crowd into excited cheers and chants for one of their favorite HWS staff members. As the band’s set and the evening came to a close, Gearan, standing behind his keyboard, casually, yet poignantly, said, “This doesn’t happen at any college in America.”
