President Mark Gearan was featured in the Feb. 15 Democrat and Chronicle, for his Reader's College class on the 2004 election, “So You Want to be President?” The class is reading political columnist Walter Shapiro's 2003 book on the current presidential race, “One-Car Caravan,” and James Campbell's book “The American Campaign,” as well as information from Web sites such as andrewsullivan.com, factcheck .org, and ABC News' The Note. The course is covering how a campaign works, and roles played by everyone from various staffers and volunteers to the media.
“It's such a critical election coming up,” Gearan said. “I thought it'd be interesting to learn about a modern-day political campaign. “My own objective,” he added, “is to foster a sense of civic engagement in our students, no matter where you come out … on any candidate.”
