The Hobart second varsity eight won its season opening head race on the Seneca-Cayuga Canal in the annual HWS Challenge on the Canal. The Statesmen also posted three third place finishes in a deep field that included more than a dozen teams and over 400 rowers.
The second varsity eight of sophomore Owen Henn, sophomore James Hollyday, senior John Heavey, junior Andrew Fosbrook, sophomore Evan White, sophomore Dillon Nachbar, sophomore Gerry Samson, sophomore Pierce Hewes, and sophomore Bob Taylor posted a winning time of 15 minutes, 6 seconds. Second place Rochester was 34 seconds behind.
Hobart finished third in the varsity eight, varsity four, and novice four events. The varsity eight race was very close with Marietta winning in 14:47, one second ahead of Rochester and three seconds ahead of the Statesmen. Likewise, the novice four race had just a 4-second gap between first place Marietta (17:37) and third place Hobart (17:41).
The Statesmen also finished fourth in the novice eight event.
“We’re excited to continue our daily improvement and we’ll try to close the 3 second gap on Marietta at the Head of the Genesee next week,” Head Coach Mike Alton said. “Although I’m disappointed we lost several of our events this year, I’m encouraged by how we raced and excited by our potential for great boat speed.”
