The William Smith College tennis team was in action today in Ithaca at the New York State Championships. Every Heron that played today advanced in their respective brackets.
Senior Chelsea Rauck led the way in the first singles flight, defeating Progga Das from Rensselaer 6-3, 6-2. She will take on Skidmore’s Dankia Robison tomorrow in the second round.
Sophomore Amanda Slack downed Kathleen Rucci from Union in the second flight 7-5, 6-2, while first-year Joanie Hilton prevailed over RIT’s Alexis Stanley 6-2, 6-0 in the third singles bracket. Slack will play Agata Kubik from Ithaca tomorrow, while Hilton will face St. Lawrence’s Casey Gilman.
In the fourth flight, first-year Casey Kennedy advanced after defeating the Saints’ Liz Karam 6-3, 6-3. She will meet Elizabeth Way from Nazareth in round two on Saturday. Sophomores Melissa Slack and Gaby Berkman received first-round byes in the fifth and sixth singles brackets, respectively, and will both play on Day 2.
In doubles action, the Slack sisters teamed up for a win in the second flight. They downed Red Hawks Christine Roe and Jessica Sitzer 8-4, while Kennedy was joined by first-year Jess McCue to defeat Dutchwomen Samantha Griffith and Kristen Ryan 8-2. Rauck and Hilton received a first round bye in the first flight.
