The William Smith varsity four won a bronze medal at the Head of the Charles today. The Herons posted their best ever finish in the collegiate four event, taking third in a field of 34 boats.
Abbie DiPalma, Lucy Paschos, Claire Brown, Caitlin Holtz, and Alexandra Meberg covered the 3-mile course in 19 minutes, 9.965 seconds. Western Rowing Club was the overall winner in 18:54.73 followed by Simmons College (19:02.926).
William Smith executed gutsy passes under Weeks Footbridge and again at Eliot Bridge. Head Coach Sandra Chu praised the efforts of the entire crew and in particular coxswain DiPalma.
“At Weeks, Abbie stuck to a perfect course as the crew she passed yielded at the last possible moment. She had another clutch performance under Elliot, eking out extra speed as she snatched the inside of the first turn and then jumped on the accelerator to dart across the course in front of two other bows to snag the inside of the next turn.”
On Sun., Oct. 19, William Smith’s varsity eight will compete in the collegiate eight event in the Head of the Charles.
