The fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team defeated Vassar College 3-0 this afternoon on William Smith Field. The Herons improve to 12-1-3 overall and 6-0-1 in the Liberty League, securing the regular season conference title. The Brewers fall to 8-5-1 on the season and 3-3-1 in the conference.
Junior Megan Stevens gave the Herons a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute of action, as she curved a corner kick into the far corner of the goal, just past senior Brewer goalkeeper Anne Hutchinson.
Less than three minutes later, sophomore forward Brelynn Nasypany tallied on a direct kick from just outside the top left corner of the box. With the goal, Nasypany increased her Liberty League-leading total to 13.
Vassar sophomore midfielder Carolyn Demougeot threatened in the 66th minute. She freed herself from the Heron defense and took the ball in toward the goal, but William Smith’s first-year goalie Amanda Davis came out to smother the ball before she could get the shot off.
First-year defender Jessie Tarantino added an insurance goal in the last minute, following a free kick and a scramble in front of the goal.
The Herons out shot their visitors 9-0. Davis recorded her sixth shutout of the season, improving to 6-0-3 in net. Hutchinson finished with one save.
As the top seed, William Smith will host the Liberty League Tournament Nov. 7-8. The Herons will take on fourth-seeded St. Lawrence in the semifinal round on Friday.
