Four William Smith Students Present Research at Conference

Catherine Cragg '05, Gretchen Lasda '04, Angela Marinucci '06, and Selva Mason '04 presented research papers at the Eastern Sociological Society conference in New York City, Feb. 19-21, 2004. The students conducted original research in fall 2003 on factors affecting differences by gender and race in retention patterns at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, as part of Professor Monson's course Sociology 211: Research Methods. Students used a variety of methods, including surveys, in-depth interviews, and content analysis, to investigate differences by gender and/or race in: students' expectations and experiences of life at HWS; student behaviors and resources associated with involuntary withdrawal; and students' reasons for transferring or remaining at HWS.

Support for travel to the conference was generously provided by the William Smith Dean's Office and the Office of the Provost.
