The Hobart College hockey team defeated Wentworth 6-4 in a non-league game at Matthews Arena on Sunday. The win allowed the Statesmen to improve to 8-3-0 overall, while the Leopards fell to 5-3-0 on the season.
Hobart was quick to score, as senior Jason Merritt put the Statesmen on the board just 27 seconds into the contest. He was assisted by junior Aleksey Koval and senior Ryan Adler.
Halfway through the first period, sophomore Pat Moriarty gave the visitors a 2-0 lead, as sophomore Tom Capalbo and sophomore Matt Wallace set him up for the score.
Hobart junior Bobby Cahill, senior Andy Brennan, and sophomore Jeremy Dwyer connected for the Statesmen’s third tally of the day, 3:16 into the second stanza. Wentworth would answer in the 18th minute, making it a 3-1 Hobart lead heading into the final break. Leopard Alan Dionne netted the goal, with Luke Heller and Greg Demerjian picking up the helpers.
Wentworth crept closer in the third, capitalizing on a power play just 43 seconds into the period to cut its deficit to one. Tyler Medeiros scored for the Leopards, assisted by Casey Shade and Dionne.
The teams went on to trade goals for the remainder of the period. The Statesmen stayed on top, thanks to back-to-back tallies from junior Gregory Alberti, and an empty net goal from Merritt in the final minute of regulation. Sophomore Daniel Organ set up both Alberti goals, while senior Michael Steiner and junior Jordan Zitoun also recorded helpers.
Hobart senior goaltender Keith Longo broke the program record for career saves. He collected 29 saves, increasing his total to 2,040. The previous benchmark was 2,015, set by Adam Lavelle ’05. Justin Marriott registered 33 stops for Wentworth.
The Statesmen will be in action again on Friday, Dec. 5, when they host Utica for an ECAC West contest at 7 p.m.
