President Mark Gearan was quoted in the story “Student community service touted: Some schools have programs to foster civic responsibilities as outlined in Glenn report” from the Feb. 3 Syracuse Post Standard. The article discusses educators' reactions to the report released the last week by former astronaut and U.S. Sen. John Glenn, which recommends that community service learning become mandatory in public schools. The report was commissioned by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and conducted by the National Commission on Service-Learning. “Those making the argument for mandated service-learning are attempting to set forth a whole range of goals and if these goals are to be a part of school curriculum they need to be mandatory,” Gearan said.
