Spelling for a C-A-U-S-E

HWS students brushed off their dictionaries and convened at the Cellar Pub recently for a battle of wits and community service in the Spelling Bee sponsored by the Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning (CCESL).

Thanks to an anonymous donor who paid the $300 fee, the Colleges entered a team in the fundraising competition for the Literacy Volunteers of Ontario County. The team was comprised of Trevor Browne ’09, Courtney Good ’12, Alexandra Miller ’12 and Ellen Harvey ’12.

“Everybody had a great time,” remarked Katie Flowers, associate director of CCESL. “Even in the spirit of competition, no one lost that this was a fundraiser.” The event aimed to raise awareness for both adult and youth literacy.

The team represented the Colleges in a regional competition against 15 other teams on Sunday at the Canandaigua Academy. Next year, there will possibly be a more diverse involvement with students, faculty and staff all representing the Colleges.
