Perkins Presents Social Norms at Siena

Wesley Perkins, professor of sociology, was invited by the Office of Student Affairs of Siena College to give an address to academic faculty representatives, deans and administrative directors there on Feb. 17.  His presentation was about “The Social Norms Approach to Promoting a Healthy Campus Environment.” Perkins spoke about theory and research on this health promotion model, which he had helped introduce to Siena for implementation over the past two years, and about the recent evidence of its significant positive result in reducing alcohol abuse on their campus.

Perkins is a graduate of Purdue University, and he received his M.A., M. Div., M. Phil. and Ph.D. from Yale University. He is the author of dozens of journal articles about substance abuse prevention and has been honored with national awards for his work in preventing alcohol and drug abuse in colleges and universities. His work with Professor David Craig is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a premiere model for substance abuse prevention.
