Political Science Career Panel

At HWS, political science students spend their time in the classroom studying all kinds of political questions, from international conflict to U.S. elections, from war to peace, and the power relations behind wealth and poverty. How will they put these investigative skills and knowledge into practice?

At 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 30 the Salisbury Center for Career Services will hold the fourth annual alumni panel on career options for HWS graduates with a degree in political science.

“We are determined to help extend the theories of what our students learn in the classroom into professional practice,” says Senior Associate Director of Career Services Brandi Ferrara. “By having alumni come back and share their experiences of moving from the classrooms of HWS to the offices and boardrooms of their current professions, our students are provided unparalleled insight into how to parlay their education into a successful job.”

Taking part in the panel will be HWS political science alumni including: J. Casey Dunlavey ’06, account manager, PAETEC Communications; Joseph Leska ’01, surgical device sales C.R. Bard, Inc.; Laura L. Lorusso Peterson ’91, vice president, Cape Cod Aggregates Corp.; Ann Rollo ’87, vice president for communications and college relations, Wells College; and Joe Sievert ’05, multifamily building analyst, Buffalo Energy.

“The idea of the panel is to show our current students that the study of liberal arts in general – and political science in particular – leads everywhere and anywhere,” says Professor of Political Science Iva Deutchman. “In this troubled economic climate, it is particularly important for our students to see the immense possibilities that exist for them out there – and there is no better way to illustrate this than with the alumni we bring back to campus.”

The panel, hosted by the Political Science Department and the Office of Career Services, will take place in the Sanford Room of the Warren Hunting Smith Library with a networking reception immediately following in the Library Atrium.
