Catherine Dowd-Reilly and Lauren Buchmann have been offered the chance to continue the work with preschool children that they began this year working with Jumpstart Geneva.
The Pearson Teacher Fellowship is a unique program available exclusively through Jumpstart. The program supports elite Jumpstart alumni who commit to teaching for two years as a preschool teacher or assistant teacher in an early childhood center serving a low-income community. The goal of the program is to help Jumpstart achieve its mission of working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed.
Benefits to Fellows include:
– $12,500 stipend: paid over two years, in addition to the Fellow's teaching salary
– Professional Development: an intensive 8-week training and teaching practice program is provided to prepare Fellows for the classroom
– Mentoring: A Pearson professional helps Fellows develop professional work-place skills and acts as a sounding board
– Other support: Fellows also benefit from paid membership to the National Association for the Education for Young Children, a professional starter library, and more
The Pearson Teaching Fellowship is made possible through a ground-breaking partnership between Jumpstart and Pearson, an international media company with market-leading businesses in education, business information, and consumer publishing.
Jumpstart is a national organization that pairs adults and preschool children within the classroom setting in a personal one-to-one relationship to work together on reading, language, and social skills for one year. Through this relationship, Jumpstart prepares a child for success in school, encourages caring adults to be teachers and leaders in education, and strengthens a family's involvement in its child's educational development. Jumpstart Geneva came to Hobart and William Smith Colleges in the fall of 2002 and has placed over 40 HWS students into Geneva Head Start and Geneva Lakefront Childcare Center for two program years.
