The chance of rain will not put a damper on tonight’s Senior Dinner. The event will begin as planned at 6:30 p.m. on the steps of Coxe Hall where students will gather and walk with President Mark Gearan out to Houghton House. Dinner will begin at 7 p.m. under the tent on the Houghton House lawn and will be highlighted by remarks from Nick Ruth, associate professor of art, who the seniors nominated as their faculty speaker. Next week, Ruth leaves for China where he has been invited to participate in the 2009 Sanbao International Printmaking Exhibition at Jingdezhen Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute in Jiangxi Province.
Following the Senior Dinner, the party will be moved to the Scandling Campus Center where President Gearan will host the Presidential Toast at 8:30 p.m. in the Vandervort Room. After toasting the graduating classes for all of their dedication, Gearan will bring the evening to a close by welcoming his Garage Band – comprised of faculty and staff – onto the stage for a much-anticipated performance.
With an official send-off from President Gearan’s Garage Band and a host of additional events to honor the accomplishments of the Classes of 2009, seniors can look forward to Commencement, which will begin with the procession at 10 a.m. followed by the Commencement Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on the Quad on Sunday, May 17.
