Atkinson earned her B.A. in anthropology from William Smith College. While a student, she was involved in dance, tennis and the Little Theatre and completed Honors. In 1981, she went to Sri Lanka. Following HWS, Atkinson earned her M.A. in liberal studies from Dartmouth College.
