President Mark Gearan, a friend of the late Washington Post columnist Mary McGrory, played the organ at her funeral, as she had requested him, and as he used to play for her at her parties.
“We just had to do what we were told — which I've been doing for 20 years,” said Gearan in the article “Columnist Mary McGrory, Having Her Final Say” from the April 27 Washington Post. Other funeral attendants included Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and his wife, Vicki, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, Al Hunt, James J. Kilpatrick, pallbearer Mark Shields, and George Stephanopoulos, Russell Baker, and Tim Russert.
Washington Post columnist Marc Fisher also wrote a tribute to McGrory, quoting Gearan, and St. Petersburg Times editor Philip Gailey, who was one of the eulogists at the funeral, also wrote a tribute. Gearan was named in Colman McCarthy's tribute to McGrory in the May 7 National Catholic Reporter.
McGrory's obituary from The Washington Post is also available.
