Lifetime Service Award Granted

During the President’s 2009 Reunion Forum over Reunion weekend, Eric Hall Anderson ’59 was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Service Award on behalf of the Hobart Alumni Association.

“Eric Hall Anderson has distinguished himself as a leadership volunteer, donor and activist for Hobart and William Smith,” said Director of Alumni Relations Jared Weeden ’91. “He really is one of these Colleges’ most relentless advocates.”

A member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity, Anderson received his B.A. in American studies, was involved in Little Theatre and worked during his years at HWS as a server in Saga.  A stalwart pillar of the Hobart Alumni Association, Anderson currently serves as the Alumni Council’s Chief Class Correspondent, is an active member of the HWS Club of Boston, and volunteers for Career Services and Reunion.

As a true supporter of the coordinate system, he is a lifetime member of both the Statesmen Athletic Association and the Heron Society. As Weeden said during the presentation, “Pick up almost any edition of the Pulteney St. Survey and you’re sure to find a photograph of Eric somewhere-always promoting his alma mater.”

Anderson, who returned to campus to celebrate his 50th Reunion, has also established three endowed scholarship funds-the Ida Johnson Anderson Scholarship Fund, the Carl M. Anderson Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Eric Hall Anderson ’59 Endowed Scholarship Fund-and is a devoted and ardent supporter of the Annual Fund.

“In gratitude for all that he has done, and all that he is doing for Hobart, for William Smith, for Hobart and William Smith, it is my distinct pleasure on behalf of the Alumni Association to present the Lifetime Service Award, on this the occasion of his 50th Reunion, to Eric Hall Anderson of the great Class of 1959,” said Weeden as he presented the Award.

“This is truly, 100 percent a surprise,” Anderson said while accepting the award.

Anderson’s message was short but poignant as he tried to hold back tears. “My thanks,” he said simply.  “My thanks to Hobart and William Smith.”

The Lifetime Service Award is presented by the Alumni Association to an alumnus who has made exceptional contributions throughout his life to the alumni programs of Hobart College.  This honor is given only when it is merited by a truly exceptional alumnus.
