USA Today ranks Hobart football

The Hobart College football team is ranked 16th in the USA Today Sports Weekly College Football Preview Issue. The Statesmen were 9-2 in 2008, winning the Liberty League Championship and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Playoffs.

Hobart, which was picked 17th in the Sporting News’ preseason poll, has finished over .500 in a program record 12 consecutive seasons. The 2008 Statesmen won their eighth conference crown (third in a row) with a 6-1 mark and advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the fifth consecutive season (7th time since 2000).

Hobart will welcome back 36 lettermen, including 14 starters (7 defense, 7 offense). Six of those starters garnered All-Liberty League honors last year.

The Statesmen will open their 116th varsity season on Sept. 12 at Dickinson. Hobart will make its home debut against Carnegie Mellon on Sept. 19. That contest will be televised by Time Warner Cable Sports.

The Statesmen’s nine-game schedule will also include home games against St. Lawrence on Oct. 3, Merchant Marine on Oct. 24, and Rensselaer on Nov. 7.
