This year, the 62nd Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition will open at the Memorial Art Gallery featuring artwork from HWS Professor of Art Phillia Yi. Rochester’s oldest and most prestigious competition showcases artists throughout western and central New York, and will open on Sunday, July 26 and remain open through Sunday, Oct. 4.
In April, Yi’s work was one of 36 works selected for the showcase from an applicant pool of 445 artists and 852 entries. The jury for the competition included Brooklyn artist James Hyde, a 2008 Guggenheim Fellow, and David A. Kwasigroh, director of exhibitions and artist services at the Indianapolis Art Center.
The show contains photography, painting, ceramics, prints, jewelry, video, and more; Yi, who is in her sixth year in the showcase, is among 14 veteran artists.
Yi holds a BFA from the State University of New York at New Paltz, and an MFA from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. She joined the faculty in 1986, and teaches printmaking and drawing courses. Her work has been shown extensively throughout the country, receiving numerous awards.
To celebrate the opening of the Finger Lakes Exhibition, a party will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 2 5at the Memorial Arts Gallery. Music will be provided by the Sim Redmond Band, jazz by the Westview Project, and a performance by Arvel Bird of the Ganondagan Native American Dance & Music Festival. The winners of this year’s jurors’ awards will be announced during the opening celebration. Tickets are $20 and reservations are required.
