Katie Pietrak ’10 is interning this summer in the sales department at Esquire magazine, located in the Hearst Towers in New York City. Over the past several semesters, Pietrak, who is a media and society major with an economics minor, has actively worked with the Salisbury Center for Career Services to explore career options related to her studies and interests. The career services staff helped her connect with Scott Lehman ’96 of Esquire, who helped facilitate an interview.
“Alum Scott Lehman was such a friendly and welcoming person from the moment I walked into the Esquire doors,” says Pietrak.
She loves the creative side of print media and spends much of her time helping her co-workers in the sales department get ready for their meetings with advertisers. She researches clients and reviews their competitors.
“The sales people need to have all the information that the clients want, as well as information that the clients did not even know existed,” she explains. “It is very rewarding knowing that my work actually benefits the magazine as a whole.”
Pietrak is confident this opportunity will help her in her future career endeavors and values the opportunity to learn through interacting with both employees and clients at Esquire. She describes the publication’s offices as a place where every day is unique and originality is praised as well as encouraged. “I would be honored to work at Esquire after college and know that it would help me to become a more confident and successful professional.”
On campus, Pietrak is a member of the Arts Collective and sergeant in arms for the Young Republicans Club. She is a member of the Herons Cross Country team as well as the club track and field team. This past year, she served on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee and is the student representative of the Heron Society, where she also worked as a marketing intern.
