As part of a summer segment of “The Today Show,” titled “Today Takes a Vacation,” co-hosts Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry traveled to Lake George, N.Y. and filmed a number of quintessential Lake George experiences, history and lore. One morning of their trip was dedicated to fly fishing along the lake and on Schroon River. The instructor and guide who taught the two CBS newswomen how to fish was John Tarrant, father of William Smith alumna, Susan Tarrant ’06.
Starting on land and showing them what Vieira called “Technique and strategy,” Tarrant then took them out on a boat in what is usually a successful fishing spot – the women laughed as they were unable to catch anything. They then moved on to Schroon River and Tarrant showed them how to don waders to fish in the river. Vieira and Curry then canoed up the river, rode bicycles and stopped for wine before meeting up with Tarrant again the next morning for a quick live segment.
Despite their unsuccessful attempts, the women said they enjoyed the fishing experience and Vieira said, “If you could use a lesson, John’s the man.”
SusanTarrant earned a B.A. in art history with a minor in media and society; she was a member of the William Smith crew team. During the Today Show’s filming, she had the opportunity to meet Vieira and Curry and have her photo taken with her father and the co-hosts.
