Most current Hobart and William Smith Colleges students have watched either MTV or Nickelodeon at some point in their lives. Little did Caitlin Lugar ’10 know that one day she would be working for MTV Networks, home of both stations. Lugar is spending her summer in Santa Monica, Calif., as an intern in the Digital Advertising Sales Department for Nickelodeon.
Through the Salisbury Center for Career Services, Lugar was put in touch with Karim Mawji ’92 who is a member of the Digital Advertising Sales Department. With the leadership of Mawji and an on-site adviser, Lugar is learning the ins and outs of how advertising space on Nickelodeon’s Web site is sold to different companies, something she explains as “digital real estate.”
This internship allows the William Smith student to not only be creative, but also to get an inside look into the industry that she hopes to one day enter.
“I am learning about one of several steps and parts that make entertainment and advertisement work and move.”
On campus, Lugar is a double major in studio art and Asian studies, is vice president of the Anime Central Club and is also involved in the yearbook and the Fisher Center. She has been using leadership skills gained on campus and through her classes to further herself in the workplace. “What I have learned and was prepared for by HWS is to be ready, active and enjoy learning something new.”
The internship was funded in part by the Parents Endowed Internship Fund.
