Hobart soccer starts ’09 ranked 12th

The Hobart College soccer team will begin the 2009 season ranked 12th in the nation according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason top 25. The Statesmen produced a program record 21-match unbeaten streak last season, reaching the third round of the NCAA Tournament and finishing with an 18-1-3 record.

The Statesmen will get a leg up on preseason preparations when they depart JFK Airport on Aug. 13 and head across the pond. Hobart will spend eight days in Ireland, touring the country and playing matches against four Irish club teams.

Tenth-year Head Coach Shawn Griffin has led Hobart to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. He is 91-64-19 in his tenure with the Statesmen and 183-109-28 in his collegiate coaching career. Griffin will welcome back 15 members of last season’s team, including 12 student-athletes who started at least one game.

On offense, Tommy Hayes is Hobart’s top returning scorer. In 17 games, he scored three goals and recorded five assists. The Statesmen will also welcome back All-Liberty League honorees Evan Grey and Chris King.

Defensively, the Statesmen allowed just 14 goals last season (0.62 GAA), but will be without goalie Pete Van Dellon ’09 and backs Matt Schwartz ’09 and Keenan Simons ’09. The mantle of leadership will rest with Matt Geswell.

Hobart’s schedule, which opens on Sept. 5 at RIT, includes five teams that earned NCAA Tournament bids in 2008. The slate includes a seven-game homestand between Sept. 12 and Oct. 3, the highlight of which is a Sept. 20 showdown with No. 18 Rochester.
