Come celebrate the end of the first week of classes with SANKOFA’s Back to School Jump-off!
On Saturday, Sept. 5, SANKOFA is sponsoring a reunion party in the Barn to welcome back HWS students in style with a disc jockey, refreshments and dancing all night.
“It’s a wonderful way to meet new students while reconnecting with old friends,” says SANKOFA President Innis Baah ’10. “For SANKOFA, this is a great way to get our name out there for new students, to let them know who we are, what we’re about, and that we’re here, especially for First-Years. For new students, it’s a great opportunity to learn what campus has to offer and, being a dry weekend, a great place to hang out and enjoy the night.”
The party will begin at 11 p.m. Saturday night and keep rocking until 3 a.m. on Sunday.
“After the first week of classes, SANKOFA realizes that all work and no play makes Jack and Jill dull boys and girls-so come have fun and keep on the lookout for other SANKOFA events throughout the year,” says Baah.
SANKOFA will also sponsor a Karaoke Night on Friday, Oct. 16 (time and venue TBA), a semi-formal Kwanzaa dinner on Friday, Dec. 11, and the annual Charity Ball on Saturday, March 27, in the Vandervort Room.
SANKOFA, the Black Student Union at HWS, is devoted to increasing and maintaining the awareness of issues that affect Africa and is Diaspora. This is accomplished through weekly discussion based meetings, the Charity Ball as a means to building our community financially, the passing of responsibility to the younger generation with the Ujimaa Board and other events that recognize and celebrate Africa and its heritage, such as Kwanzaa. SANKOFA, which meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m., is a nonexclusive organization that welcomes all.
