#12 Statesmen handle Golden Flyers, 4-1

The 12th-ranked Hobart College soccer team downed Nazareth 4-1 today, in the final match of the Doug May Classic. The Statesmen improve to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Golden Flyers slip to 0-2-0 overall.

Sophomore forward Tommy Hayes had a hand in every Hobart goal today, scoring two and assisting two, and tying the Hobart single game record for points (6) along the way.

Hayes netted the first goal of the day in the 42nd minute of action, assisted by first-year Caetano Sanchez.

Nazareth’s Andrew Alaimo and Chris Lofgren teamed up to even the game at 1-all in the 61st minute, but the tie would be short-lived. Hayes went on to set up senior midfielder Grant Morrison for his first tally of the year at 73:20, and at 81:18, helped sophomore forward Tony Yeboah net his first goal as a Statesman.

In the 83rd minute, Hayes added one more insurance tally, stealing the ball from a Golden Flyer defender and taking it in for the score.

Hobart sophomore goalie Charlie Hale (Winchester/Winchester, Mass.) picked up two saves on the day, while Trey Barresi recorded three stops for Nazareth.

The Statesmen outshot the Golden Flyers 13-9, but the hosts owned a 7-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Hobart will be back in action Sept. 9, when the Statesmen travel to Utica for a non-league match at 4:30 p.m.
