Dancer Learns Physical Therapy

Lauren Budd ’10 took on two internships this summer that perfectly complemented her interests and goals as a dance major who plans to go to graduate school for physical therapy.  Budd interned and shadowed for Huson Physical Therapy over an eight week period and then started her Paul Taylor Summer Dance Intensive which lasted most of July.

At the Huson Physical Therapy Clinic, Budd was able to observe all of the patient interaction that therapist Mike Huson had. “This environment allowed for a great learning experience, providing me with opportunities to ask questions and learn more about a certain patient’s injury and their treatment plan. I really enjoyed getting to know the patients and seeing their amazing progress, as well as learning so much about physical therapy as a career, and the endless possibilities,” Budd said.

During the Paul Taylor Summer Dance Intensive, she took an hour and a half class in the morning, a two hour modern Taylor Technique Class and then two hours to learn a new piece from Paul Taylor’s repertory. “I really loved the fact that I got to dance five days a week and that we got to take classes taught by company members and previous company members (movie stars in the world of dance).”

She found out about Paul Taylor through the Taylor 2 Company dancers who came to do a residency on campus last fall. “They encouraged all of us to do one of the intensives. A few other students did the winter intensives and spoke highly of it, so I decided to do the summer one.”

Budd is hoping that the two experiences will help her hone her post-graduate choices so she has a better idea about whether she wants to go to physical therapy school right after graduation or if she wants to take some time to dance professionally. “We shall see!” she laughed.
