Hobart’s first goal of the day came early, just 5 minutes, 32 seconds into the match. Sophomore midfielder Chris King headed in his first goal of the year, connecting on a long throw-in from junior midfielder Justin Dotzman.
Hobart sophomore Nate Friedman came up with a big defensive play in the 76th minute. Brockport’s leading scorer, Steve Abgarian, got loose on a breakaway and was headed toward the Statesmen goal for a one-on-one chance vs. sophomore goalie Charlie Hale. Friedman caught up to Abgarian just in time to deflect his shot wide, and preserve Hobart’s lead.
After many close attempts, the Statesmen increased their lead to 2-0 in the 88th minute. First-year midfielder Alex Kittelberger one-timed a short pass from sophomore midfielder Michael Moulton from the right side of the goal. Kittelberger’s first collegiate tally was shot from close range; about 2 yards out.
The Statesmen outshot the Golden Eagles 18-7, and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Hale finished with one save in his third shutout of the year, while Brockport goalkeeper Joe Marino collected six saves.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Cozzens Field on Tues., Sept. 15, when they take on St. John Fisher at 4:30 p.m.
