The 19th-ranked Hobart College soccer team edged Medaille College 1-0 in overtime tonight on Cozzens Field, thanks to a goal from sophomore Michael Moulton in the 98th minute. The Statesmen improve to 7-1-1 overall, while the Mavericks slip to 8-2-1 on the season.
After more than 95 minutes of scoreless, back-and-forth action, Hobart finally broke through. Sophomore Andrew Steates sent a cross in front of the goal, which Moulton settled and put away for the victory. The goal marked Moulton’s third of the year.
Regulation time featured scoring opportunities for both squads. In the 14th minute, first-year Will Abbott had the best chance for the Statesmen. His short-range header on goal after a corner kick from Moulton was stopped by Medaille goalie Ryan Goettel.
In the 18th minute, Maverick Alexander Rouse had a wide open one-on-one shot at Hobart sophomore goalkeeper Charlie Hale, but his shot from about 5 yards in front went high over the crossbar.
In the second half, Abbott had an open look at the goal after sophomore Evan Grey sent a lead pass up the middle, but Goettel made the diving save.
The Mavericks nearly ended the game in the 92nd minute, as Rouse flicked the ball on to George Tor for a one-on-one chance with Hale, but this time it was Hale with the diving stop.
Medaille held a 19-16 advantage in total shots, but the Statesmen owned a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Hobart took nine corner kicks to the Mavericks’ six.
Hale finished with four saves en route to his seventh shutout of the season, while Goettel collected five stops for Medaille.
The Statesmen cap their seven-game homestand on Oct. 3, when they host Fredonia for a non-league match at 2 p.m.
