Dan Valente, a member of the Hobart Class of 2005, was featured in the May 13 Finger Lakes Times in the article “Valente leads from the cage.”
Valente is a third-degree black belt (sandan) in a 900-year-old martial art (Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu). He believes learning the ancient Japanese form of self-defense has contributed to a stellar season as the Statesmen's starting goalie.
“More than anything, it just gets you able to focus, gets your mind ready,” Valente explained. “Before games I can really concentrate on what I need to do because I've been taught to concentrate in martial arts so hard. Physically, you get a lot of stretching, so I'm pretty limber and able to make some saves that maybe some people might not be able to make.”
