Over Winter Break, the Salisbury Center for Career Services offers Pathways Career Exploration Programs: a variety of opportunities for students to explore career and internship options with tours, talks and meetings in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles at some of the top businesses in fields ranging from finance to film.
On Monday, Dec. 21, and Tuesday, Dec. 22, the Wall Street Experience will be held in New York City for students who want to learn more about the world of finance. Students will be accompanied by a faculty member from the Economics Department as they spend two days with alums and employers working at global investment banks, ratings agencies and hedge funds all over Manhattan. Prior venues included: JP Morgan, Bloomberg, Citi, Oppenheimer, Merrill Lynch, Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Deutsche Bank. Application deadline: Monday, Oct. 19 by 4:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, Jan. 5, the Media/Advertising/Public Relations Day will be held in New York City, where students will learn from and listen to experts in the fields ranging from client advertising to PR budgets at companies such as American Airlines, BMW and Verizon. Students will meet with executives from the global holding company Interpublic Group as well as boutique-sized agencies in the industry. Application deadline: Monday, Nov. 2 by 4:30 p.m.
On Thursday, Jan. 7, a Publishing/Journalism Day will be held in New York City for students interested in book, magazine or online publishing and journalism to meet with alums and employers in the various forms of publishing. Prior venues included: Random House, Conde Nast, Business Week and more. Application deadline: Monday, Nov. 2 by 4:30 p.m.
On Friday, Jan. 8 and Saturday, Jan. 9, the annual Day on the Hill, an exciting event for students who want to learn more about the world of politics will be held in Washington, D.C. Faculty members DeWayne Lucas and Iva Deutchman from the Political Science Department will guide students around Washington, D.C. for two days that will include speakers from a variety of political offices and organizations. In addition, students will have the opportunity to participate in site visits and a tour of the White House by a Hobart alumnus who works for the Secret Service. A networking reception held in conjunction with the HWS D.C. Club will round out the experience. Application deadline: Monday, Oct. 26 by 4:30 p.m.
Between Monday, Jan. 11 and Wednesday, Jan. 13, Professors Les Friedman and Grant Holly will lead the LA Entertainment and Media Event in Los Angeles, in which students will have the opportunity to learn more about the worlds of media and entertainment through site visits and presentations by alumni and alumnae. In addition, students will attend a networking reception at Fox Sports. Application deadline: Monday, Oct. 26 by 4:30 p.m.
The Winter Break Job Shadow/Externship Program will be ongoing throughout Winter Break. Students can spend a day or a week experiencing the inner workings of an organization. The staff at the Salisbury Center for Career Services will assist students in finding a placement at an organization based on geographic location and career preference. Application deadline: Monday, Nov. 2 by 4:30 p.m.
