The William Smith College tennis team was in action today at the New York State Championships. Four Herons advanced to the quarterfinal round in their respective singles brackets, while all three William Smith doubles teams moved on as well.
In the second singles bracket, first-year Kiara Ocasio defeated Erin McLaughlin of Brockport 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. Tomorrow, she’ll take on second-seeded Laura Attley from Skidmore. Ocasio also teamed up with sophomore Joanie Hilton for an 8-5 win over the Golden Eagles’ Kaitlyn Broderick and Carolyn McMeneman in the first doubles flight.
Sophomore Casey Kennedy blanked RIT’s Michele Caporali 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of the third singles bracket, earning a match with fourth-seeded Devra Reiman in the quarterfinals, while senior Shari Damon defeated Paige Cohen of St. Lawrence 6-1, 6-2 in fourth singles, and will take on fourth-seeded Jamie Bow of Rochester next. Kennedy and Damon teamed up for a victory in the second doubles bracket as well, topping Katie Barlow and Katie Catalano from St. John Fisher 8-0. They will square off against the top-seeded team from Vassar in the quarterfinals.
In sixth singles action, first-year Remy Raevsky downed Rensselaer’s Alexandra Armstrong 6-1, 6-0. Raevsky, the fourth seed in the bracket, will take on the Saints’ Victoria Alt on Saturday.
Sophomores Jess McCue and Katie Serock combined for an 8-4 win over the Tigers’ Caporali and Julie Burkett in the third doubles flight. They will also take on the top-seeded team in their bracket tomorrow, also from Vassar.
