The William Smith College tennis team was in action today at the New York State Championships. First-year Remy Raevsky was the lone Heron to advance to the semifinal round.
Playing in the sixth singles bracket, fourth-seeded Raevsky defeated St. Lawrence’s Victoria Ault 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinal round to earn a match with top-seeded Natalie Santiago from Vassar in the semifinals. Santiago prevailed 6-0, 6-2 to move on to the finals.
First-year Kiara Ocasio, sophomore Casey Kennedy, and senior Shari Damon lost in the quarterfinal round of the second, third, and fourth singles flights, respectively.
All three of the Herons’ doubles teams were in action in the quarterfinals today. Ocasio and sophomore Joanie Hilton fell 8-0 to fourth-seeded Cristina Nunez and Melissa Nunez of Ithaca in the first doubles bracket, while Damon and Kennedy lost to top-seeded Brewers Jennifer Beckerman and Nicole Block 8-2 in second doubles. In the third doubles flight, sophomores Jess McCue and Katie Serock dropped a hard-fought match to the first-seeded team of Caroline Dunn-Rankin and Santiago of Vassar, 8-6.
The New York State Championships marked the final tournament of the fall season for the Herons.
