The Hobart College hockey team topped Buffalo State 9-1 in non-league action at The Cooler tonight. The Statesmen improve to 1-0-1 overall, while the Bengals slip to 0-1-1 on the season.
Junior Christopher Bower led Hobart with two goals and an assist, while sophomore Rick Longobardi netted two goals. First-year Chris Cannizzaro, first-year Mike White, junior Danny Organ and junior Matthew Wallace each added a goal and a helper as well.
Bower scored the first two goals of the game. He tallied his first at 8:04 in the first period, set up by first-year Harry Radovich, then put Hobart up 2-0 at 8:44 in the second, assisted by Organ.
Less than three minutes later, junior Tommy Capalbo lit the lamp on a power play to give the Statesmen a 3-0 lead. Junior Kyle Whitaker picked up the helper.
The Bengals finally got on the board 12:33 into the second period. Nick Petriello cut Hobart’s lead to 3-1, after assists from Jim Durham and Joel Sheppard.
The Statesmen distanced themselves from Buffalo State in the third period, netting six goals. Cannizzaro started the scoring run just 2:22 into the stanza. Longobardi, White, Organ, and Wallace followed suit over the next 10 minutes. Longobardi capped the streak with his second of the night at the 18:17 mark.
Hobart held a 47-28 advantage in shots. The Statesmen were 3-for-7 on the power play, while the Bengals were 0-for-5.
Hobart first-year goaltender Nick Broadwater collected 27 saves for his first collegiate victory, while Alan Fritch picked up 38 stops for Buffalo State.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Oct. 31, when they host Manhattanville for their first ECAC West contest of the year at 7 p.m.
