The Hobart and William Smith Sailing team is working alongside Relay for Life and Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) to support cancer awareness and research. This year the team is involved with various activities and fundraising initiatives to support this worthy cause. For the month of October, the team has supported Breast Cancer Awareness Month and raised more than $700.
In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the HWS Sailing team has been wearing pink pinnies at all women’s events. The pink pinnies debuted at the Navy Fall Women’s Regatta in Annapolis, Md., and were the talk of the regatta; sailors and coaches alike were impressed by the team’s creativity and support. In addition, the pinnies have been on the road with the women’s team as they travelled the east coast to regattas at Yale, Old Dominion University, and Connecticut College.
Another sailing team initiative this fall has been fundraising efforts for Relay for Life.
The sailing team’s first fundraising event for Relay took place over fall break. The team held a clinic for 30 high school sailors from Buffalo to Syracuse, New York. It was a tremendously successful event because HWS sailors were able to get into boats with students to give them individual coaching. Later, the high school sailors were able to apply what they learned to racing during a mock regatta. In lieu of a registration fee, the team asked for donations toward Relay for Life and $400 was raised. In addition to the high school clinic, the team has an annual T-shirt fundraising event. This year the team decided that $1 from each shirt will go to Relay for Life. To date, more than 300 shirts have been sold.
The HWS Sailing team take on more challenges in the coming months in preparation for Relay for Life. The team is very excited about their success thus far, and is looking forward to future fundraising as well as walking at Relay for Life on April 10.
