The William Smith field hockey team ended the 2009 season on a high note, defeating visiting Geneseo State 3-1 on McCooey Field this afternoon. The Herons end the campaign with a 9-8 record, marking their 25th consecutive winning season, while the Blue Knights end the regular season with an 11-5 mark.
Heron Annie Kietzman opened the scoring in the 14th minute, firing home a point-blank shot off a feed from Sarah Gall. Her team-leading 10th goal of the season proved to be the only score of the first half.
William Smith doubled its lead in the 48th minute when Janelle Walkley converted a penalty stroke with a low shot to the right corner of the cage. Just over two minutes later, Kiersten Hamilton redirected a shot by Emily Atwan for a 3-0 Heron lead.
The Blue Knights broke up the shutout in the 65th minute. Geneseo played a ball in on goal from outside the circle. Goalie Taryn Little played the ball off her pads, but the rebound came right to Chellie Johnson, who netted her third goal of the season.
Little finished with four saves, as did her counterpart, Nicole Zito.
The win is William Smith’s 12th in a row over Geneseo since 1998.
