Hobart sophomore Matt Pebole scored a career-high 35 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to lead the Statesmen basketball team past St. John Fisher 90-83. His first career double-double helped Hobart up its record to 3-2, while the Cardinals suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 2-1.
St. John Fisher led by as many as eight in the first half, but the Statesmen ended the first half on a 9-0 run to take a 43-39 lead into the intermission. Pebole scored 20 points before halftime, netting half of the team’s 16 field goals.
The Statesmen never trailed in the second half. The Cardinals cut Hobart’s lead to six, 70-64, with 6:47 left on a basket by Jason Norsen, but the Statesmen countered with an 11-2 spurge. First-year Stefan Thompson scored nine of his 18 points during the run, putting Hobart up 15.
The Statesmen were unable to put the game out of reach at the free throw line, missing the front end of a 1-and-1 three times in the final two minutes as the Cardinals closed to within six with 47 ticks left, but Hobart sank five of its final six free throws to secure the win.
Junior Adam Salzmann also produced a double-double for the Statesmen on 10 points and 11 rebounds, while junior Tim Llewellyn chipped in nine points, a team-high six assists, and a game-high five steals.
Jordan Koch led Fisher with 17 points, while Michael Wopperer added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Matt Newman (15 points) and Ozell Franklin (11) also scored in double figures. Will Cornett dished out a career-best nine assists to go with eight points, and six boards.
Hobart finished the game with a 40-34 advantage on the glass and doubled up Fisher (16-8) in offensive rebounds.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Dec. 5, when they visit Cazenovia. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
