It’s time to celebrate Hanukkah

“Put on your yarmulke, It’s time to celebrate Hanukkah!” shout the posters around campus announcing the upcoming schedule for Hanukkah festivities.  Organizers believe that there’s no reason to let finals stop the HWS community from enjoying a happy Hanukkah, and HWS Hillel and the Abbe Center for Jewish Life have scheduled activities for each of Hanukkah’s festive eight nights at the Abbe Center.

On Friday, Dec. 11, starting at 4:30 p.m. there will be Menorah lighting accompanied by dreidles, games, and watching the Rugrats’ Hanukkah special. As usual, Kosher Shabbat dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. and it is asked that if you intend to participate to please RSVP at

On Saturday, Dec. 12, there will be Havdalah and Menorah lighting starting at 5:35 p.m., followed by the Fried Food Fest.  Sunday, Dec. 13, brings Menorah lighting at 5 p.m. along with Soofganiyot, also known as jelly doughnuts.

On Monday, Dec. 14, the lighting of the Menorah and the feasting with Kosher hot dogs will be held. On Tuesday, Dec. 15, the fifth day of Hanukkah, the Menorah lighting will be accompanied by bagels and lox; Wednesday’s treat will be Hanukkah cookie baking. Thursday’s celebration offers a holiday favorite, delicious latkes to go with the lighting of the Menorah. Each night’s activities begin at 5 p.m.

On the final day, Friday, Dec. 18, Hanukkah will round out with a fully lit Menorah, taking place at 4:30 p.m., followed by Shabbat and pizza!  So even if the work gets tough, do not neglect the Festival of Lights!  Come join HWS Hillel at the Abbe Center for Jewish Life, located at 764 S. Main St.: it is sure to be a busy week!
