Merritt ’71 Elected President of New York State Academy of Family Physicians

The New York State Academy of Family Physicians (NYSAFP) has elected Andrew J. Merritt, M.D., of Marcellus, as its president. Dr. Merritt was elected to a one-year term at the NYSAFP Congress of Delegates on June 5 in Albany. Dr. Merritt is a member and past-president of the medical staff at Community General Hospital. He is also vice-chairman of the hospital’s Department of Family Practice and was on the organizing committee for Community General Hospital Physician’s Organization, serving on the board of directors and as medical director for the organization. Community General Hospital Physician Elected President of Statewide Medical Society

(June 8, 2004) The New York State Academy of Family Physicians (NYSAFP) has elected Andrew J. Merritt, MD, of Marcellus, as its president. Dr. Merritt was elected to a one-year term at the NYSAFP Congress of Delegates on June 5 in Albany.

Dr. Merritt is a member and past-president of the medical staff at Community General Hospital. He is also vice-chairman of the hospital’s Department of Family Practice and was on the organizing committee for Community General Hospital Physician’s Organization, serving on the board of directors and as medical director for the organization. He is treasurer of the Health Alliance PHO.

Dr. Merritt is a graduate of Hobart and William Smith Colleges and New York University School of Medicine. He is in private medical practice in Marcellus.

Dr. Merritt is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and NYSAFP. He served as secretary, treasurer, director, vice president, nominations chairman, finance committee chairman and president-elect for NYSAFP. Dr. Merritt served as vice president, president-elect and president of the Onondaga County Chapter of NYSAFP. He is also a member of the Medical Society of the State of NY (MSSNY) and its Onondaga County Chapter. He chairs the MSSNY Committee on Health Care Delivery Systems & Medicaid. He is a former alternate delegate to MSSNY, delegate, treasurer, vice president, and president of the Onondaga County Medical Society.

Dr. Merritt has been active in community and civic affairs. He was president of the Marcellus Recreation Commission in 1982-83; served on the Senior Citizens Housing Committee in 1986; served on the Marcellus Boosters Scholarship Committee in 1991; served on the Village of Marcellus Planning Board in 1992-95; coached youth sports from 1986-1991; and served on the Town of Marcellus Planning Board Steering Committee from 1999-01.

The NYSAFP is the New York chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians. NYSAFP represents more than 4,500 family physicians and medical students throughout the state and provides advocacy, education and information for its members.
