Paul A. Passavant, assistant professor of political science, and Jodi Dean, associate professor of political science, recently signed a contract with Routledge for their co-edited volume, The Empire's New Clothes. With contributions from an international and interdisciplinary set of scholars, this book will contribute to the increasingly important debate around the new book Empire, by Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri. The project originated in junior-senior seminars Passavant and Dean co-taught in the political science department in the fall of 2000 as well as this term. Moreover, it builds from papers both faculty members presented at the Law and Society Association's annual meeting in Budapest, Hungary, in July 2001 and at the Critical Legal Conference held at University of Kent, Canterbury, England, in September 2001. The book will include Passavant and Dean's article, “Representation and the Event,” recently published in a special issue of the electronic journal Theory and Event, dedicated to September 11th.
